Anyway, the treadmill is pretty cool, we like it. Chris has been using it too, but no, I can't convince him to join in on a race, he's a party pooper. What would make the treadmill so much cooler is if we could get the dang iFit Live to properly integrate with google maps! I keep reading about how fun it is to run "through" the street view but it just doesn't work properly on our machine. All it does is adjust the incline to the terrain in custom maps that you create. It also has pre-programmed workouts that you can use, as well as some with trainers such as Jillian Michaels where they yell at you the whole time. But all I really want to do is run in street view... and of course customer service is terrible. I have made several custom maps that i'm excited to use when we get it working: the trail off the river in Manayunk, outside of Philadelphia that my best friend runs, a two mile route that ends at my grandfather's house in Mt. Pleasant, PA, a 3 mile loop I used to run when living at my parent's house, & a few mile trek along main street Greensburg. Should be fun...
Anyway, I am a bit nervous about training mostly on a treadmill. I read that you need to set it to at least a 1% incline to simulate wind resistance. But it still feels ten times easier than running outside. I mean, the friggin' belt is moving under you, rather than you pushing against the stationary pavement. Oh well, maybe we will have some more freakishly warm winter days so I can get some proper outdoor runs in before March.
My main challenge is figuring out the best time to run. I prefer to do it in the morning before work, but I already wake up very early (don't you feel bad for me, parents of young babies who I know get much less sleep than I?). When I get home, the last thing I want to do is run. I usually want to eat dinner immediately, and who wants to run after eating? Not this girl.
Once i'm up and pull on my sneakers though, i'm ready to go. It's just getting to that point that's difficult. Because, I. love. sleeping. so. much.
I have been thinking alot about your treadmill and the maps. It reminds me of how much we are living in the future. When I was a kid and my father was doing a great deal of running I used to ride my bike along with him on his long runs. sometimes 5 -8 miles and sometimes 18ish. When We got home I would thumb through his runners world magazines and his various fitness books. The books were already out of date but they had black and white photos in them of runners with waffle iron shoes and odd instructions for improving your training.
ReplyDeleteI think if the people in those books could have seen your descriptions of what your tredmill should be doing they would think you were from the far future.
Your natural asumption of the technology is very nearly sci-fi to the Missy of the long bike rides.
The current Missy on the other hand wonders how you will solve the google maps integration and thinks about getting a treadmill like yours.
