Running apps

Because Licia and Kathryn are so good about the running I always feel particularly bad about my own failures to get out and run.
This week I have a 5k for Thanksgiving.
The kids will do a 1k if they are healthy enough to do it.
I have given myself the 5k as a decider. If I feel ok doing it and after doing it then I hope to start training for a half marathon.
All of that seems nearly overwhelming and hard enough that it genuinely might not happen.
Organizing my family and getting everyone healthy and dressed and on time to do any kind of race seems truly challenging. Last year we had a horrible time of it.
Mom got lost and Licia almost failed to make the start because of that. For some unfathomable reason (i am sure there was one at the time) the dog was brought along and brought along without a leash.
David and I completely missed the race trying to take care of everyone. This year at least no one will bring the dog.
I have been sick for almost a month and am told that I should go to the Doctor to check for strep.
The kids and Megan especially may not be up to leaving the house. If that happens who knows.
BUT
On the chance that everything works out and I start running seriously again I have been thinking about things to help me keep it up.
I might get a new running app, I have been looking at these.

July is our goal

July is hot and Kathryn wants to do a marathon and a half marathon but apparently no on in the state other than her wants to.

What about a shorter run?
15k?

The Holi Color run?

A Zombie Race?

An Adventure Run?

What run should we do in July
Holi Color Run
Zombie Race

Day 2

Well, that's another day down.  6 kilometers in the drizzle.

They did some study that said if you announce your intentions and goals you are less likely to achieve them.  I didn't really hear the reason why.  But they also say that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome.  I've not announced my goals and not achieved them enough times to know that isn't working.  So I'm going to try it this way this time.

I'll probably only post on the weekends but if several weekends pass with no post that probably means bad news in the motivation department.  But for now wish me luck for what is going to be a long busy week.

Day 1 (Again)

Work gets stressful and life gets complicated and goals get relegated to nice ideas.  I wanted to run a full marathon before turning 40 and well. . . it's about a half a year too late for that.  I managed to finish two half marathons which if you were really creative you could say equaled a whole, and now running is something I do to relax in the morning (at a very relaxing pace).

Yesterday I decided to get back on top of it though, and today was my Day 1.  Most marathon training programs day you should be running 15-30 miles a week already before you start.  I've probably been doing the very very bottom end of that.  I mean scraping the absolute bottom on a good week.  I have a month till the end of the semester so I've decided to get running safely toward the upper end of that range and when the semester ends start a 16 week program.  Towards that goal I got out there and ran 6 kilometers at a faster clip than usual and hopefully will keep on doing that for the rest of the month.

Injury and Recovery

Last year’s running did not go as planned. I was ambitious and signed up for plenty of spring races and was training accordingly. Then just at the very beginning of the spring racing season as I was running a nice trail run my leg started hurting like a bad cramp. I walked the rest of the first loop hoping my leg would quit hurting. It took almost two months for my leg to get better sufficiently to start running again. I believe it must have been a stress fracture. So when I could start running again I worked on getting my running mussels back in shape and trained for the September half marathon. Training was going well and I was ready when a week before I pulled something in my leg. I rested from running for the rest of the week in hopes of being able to run the half marathon. I got up early drove over and started the race but ended up turning back and going home since my leg was not better. I needed to rest several weeks and had a slight relapse so my training had been very patchy when the November half marathon came. My leg held out for that and I was happy to be able to finish it although it challenging and I was slow as expected. I am now running regularly again if still slowly and trying not to overdo it. I am hoping to avoid more overuse injuries this year.

Oh hi again

We did do the Turkey Trot again.

This time with Megs.

We are still doing Zombies Run.

It is cold.
Kathryn and Licia and I are doing a relay marathon in Feburary.
I am not remotely ready.

Licia is of course ready and Kathryn tells me she is doing hour plus runs routinely.
I will bug them for updates.

I am thinking strongly of joining a gym to deal with the cold and get more miles in.
